As an expatriate teacher you are immediately elevated to god-like status and you are expected to achieve great things in relatively short periods of time. It is up to you to make lessons interesting and rewarding. I have had the pleasure of teaching many students of different ages and different cultural backgrounds. I have taught five-year-olds in school and businessmen twice my age in big multi-national corporations. As a teacher you need to be extremely creative and communicative to succeed. Making a good first impression is vital, so make sure you look smart. Use all the resources avaliable to you. Constantly vary the lesson content, as Russian people do not have the same concentration capacity as say, a Chinese student. Russians are very enthusiastic, but in short bursts. As a teacher of English in Moscow you are immediately made familiar with Russian culture. You can learn so much from your students. They will be more than happy to talk about all kinds of cross-cultural differences and will probably present you with fierce arguments claiming the Russian way is better! But make sure you avoid delicate issues such as politics and war- this never goes down well with Russians unless you are really close friends. Above all, if you enjoy the lessons, then they will too!
